Iram and Mehwish are our readers from Lahore. They love Punjabi music and spicy foods. Both are working in reputable comapnies, after their jobs they can be often found in Food Street. Lahore is Pakistan’s true food centre. Lahorites have access not only to a large number of Pakistani dishes and Punjabi specialities, it has fast food restaurants, Western dishes, steak houses, pizzas, Japanese, Chinese, Lebanese, Afghani, Thai cooking and even Indian Thali and Dossas.
They say we are food experts. They love Mughal-style Pakistani curries and Punjabi Barbecue and Karahis. In the curry category, the best choice is available at Village, Shezan Oriental, Bellpepper, Kabana, Paradise, Ziafat etc., where you can get reasonably good quality Curries, Biryanis, Nans etc.
Dum Pukht (PC) serves some Westernised curries. Most dishes are very expensive and lack the true Mughal curry taste. It seems the dishes are made for foreign customers. For the real Delhi-style taste, turn to wayside shops like Paradise Canteen (near GPO) which serves the tastiest curries, Payas, Batairs and Biryani in town. I also visit Nanbai shops like Abdul Rehman’s in Old Anarkali, Mian Restaurant (off Canal Bank, Gulberg), Baghdadi (Shadman Market), Labha (Davis Road) and one or two outlets in Sadar, Main Market Gulberg, Liberty etc. Khan Baba (Chauburji) is popular for its Pakistani dishes well-cooked in Desi Ghee.
In 1946 the family of Sir Ganga Ram started a medical college by the name Balak Ram medical College named after a son of Sir Ganga Ram. Soon after claiming independence in 1947 which engulfed this part of the sub-continent as well, the college which was in its infancy stood virtually closed ad its premises were abandoned. However, the renowned medical professional Prof. Shujaat Ali with the help and assistance of his other professional colleagues nurtured the idea of setting up a medical institution for producing female doctors and train them for helping in the health care of the women folk of this newly established country. It was especially felt that, by virtue of cultural and social set up of a Muslim society it was a much needed requirement of the time.
Girls from a commerce college in Lahore are protesting against fee raise. Its totally insane to increase fee to 120% and discourage these beautiful girls from studying.
Growing fruit trees in your backyard has many benefits. Firstly, they create a lovely shady place to relax or for the children to play under. This will save them getting sunburned and possibly developing skin cancer in later life. Secondly these trees look beautiful. Not only do they spend several weeks of the year covered in pretty blossoms, but after that the developing fruit looks attractive for months. Their leaves are quite attractive and the shady branches give birds somewhere to rest and cool off. Trees play a significant role in our environment. This message has been highly touted by environmental activist groups for more than a decade now, and its popularity continues to grow, as does the group of those who ascribe to its valuable message. But trees need not only be a rural treasure. There are significant benefits to incorporating a notable tree population into urban areas, too. For this reason, many homeowners, community businesses, and municipalities set aside a portion of their annual budget to create and maintain landscaping. And as this practice has grown, benefits of doing so have been studied and brought to light.
